Becoming a Volunteer

LGBT YouthLine is only able to exist because of the support of our HelpLine volunteers! We recruit volunteers once a year. If you’re interested in joining us, give us a follow us on social media and consider applying during our recruitment period.

Who Can Volunteer?

To volunteer on the helpline, you must be part of the 2SLGBTQ+ community, between 16-29, and living in Ontario. It's okay if you don't have any experience with peer support yet, or if you're not out. A computer and internet connection are required to volunteer.

What's it Like?

Volunteering on the HelpLine is a challenging role, but often very rewarding! Many of our volunteers join the HelpLine to improve their skills in active listening, to support others in their communities, or to be in a space with other queer and trans youth.

What's Included

Our 13-week training program, focused on anti-oppression, anti-racism, harm reduction, and active listening.

Additional workshops, speakers, socials, and movie nights throughout the year.

A Discord specifically for volunteers and alumni to connect virtually as well as share events and opportunities happening in their own communities

Opportunities to help out with Pride tabling in cities across Ontario, and participate in community events

More About Our Training Program

Training helps build the skills to support others while connecting with queer and trans peers across Ontario. Our training was developed over years with input from community leaders, staff, and volunteers.

What to Expect

Our annual training program takes place over 13 weeks, with a 3-hour weekly commitment.

Each week, there's 1 hour of online learning (done independently) covering foundational concepts, historical info, and peer support principles.

We also have weekly 2-hour Zoom sessions to practice applying these skills in real-life scenarios.
